Block Spot Illustration Toolkit

In partnership with Angie Garland, we developed a spot illustration style for the Block brand, and created a toolkit in Figma for designers on our team to create new illustrations.

Our approach to this toolkit was to create a tool that designers could use to quickly iterate and make new illustrations without having to start from scratch, while still wanting each new illustration to feel unique. We developed a set of illustrated elements – representations of humanity in low and high fidelity, as well as objects in low and high fidelity. We developed a clear system for how these pieces work together, and crafted guidance as reference for designers using the toolkit.

The image to the right is an example of an illustration that was generated using this toolkit – showing how our high-fidelity and low-fidelity elements work together to create a complex composition. I’ve also included a few examples of the illustrations that make up the toolkit, and a quick look at how these function within Figma.
